The University of Wyoming basketball team landed its first recruit of the spring when Salt Lake Community Colleges high-scoring swingman/shooting guard Tim Henry signed a national letter of intent with the Cowboys on Monday.
The 6-foot-5, 185-pound Henry averaged 19.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists this past winter as a redshirt freshman in leading Salt Lake Community College to an overall record of 21-11 and a 9-7 mark in Scenic West Athletic Conference play.
This past winter Henry shot 49.4 percent from the field overall (237-of-480), 34.9 percent from the 3-point arc (51-of-46) and 69.8 percent from the free throw line (104-of-149). Henry scored 30 or more points five times this past season, including 39 against Snow College and 37 against College of Southern Idaho.
He was a first-team all-conference selection as well as a SWAC Regional all-tournament pick.
Henry, who was Utahs Mr. Basketball and the Class 5A Most Valuable Player at Mountain View High School in Orem, Utah, his senior year, did not play his freshman year at Salt Lake Community College because of a knee injury.
As a result, Henry will have three years of eligibility remaining at Wyoming.
Henry narrowed his final decision down to Wyoming, Hawaii and Idaho State. He visited both Wyoming and Hawaii earlier this month.
It was a difficult sell for Wyoming and head coach Steve McClain since Henrys brother, Scott, is currently a member of the Idaho State basketball team, while his sister, Lindsey, and brother-in-law, Jeff Blackett, have signed to play volleyball and basketball, respectively, at Hawaii.
Henry decided on Wyoming after he and his family met with McClain Sunday night in Orem.
When I went to Wyoming for a visit (earlier this month), I felt real good about it, Henry told JUCO Junction. Coach McClain talked to me a lot on the visit, and that impressed me.
One of the advantages of signing with Wyoming is that Henry will have the chance to play in his native Beehive State against both BYU and Utah.
I also liked the facilities and the coaching staff at Wyoming, and I feel that I can come in and play, Henry said. I didnt have the same feeling at Hawaii. Hawaii itself is beautiful, and you cant find a better location, but it just didnt click with me like Wyoming did.
Henry was especially impressive in the Region 18 Tournament in St. George, Utah, in March, where he consistently scored in transition and played with a great deal of energy the entire 40 minutes, according to JUCO Junction.
Henry, who served a two-year LDS church mission to Argentina, feels he can bring some important ingredients to the Wyoming basketball program.
They lost a two guard [Donta Richardson] and Marcus Bailey, so they are expecting me to go in there and do lots of things, Henry said. They know I can score, but Coach McClain talked about how he liked my competitiveness and my flamboyance. I am also 22-years-old, so I should also bring more leadership and maturity than the average recruit.
Henry is one of 11 children from a very athletic family.
In addition to Scott and Lindsey, Henrys sisters Lori and Kim played basketball at BYU; another sister, Stephanie, played basketball at Kansas; and yet another sister, Karrie, played basketball at Southern Utah. Two other brothers Tom and Daniel played football and basketball, respectively at Southern Utah and Salt Lake Community College. Henry also has a brother-in-law, Kevin Nixon, who played basketball at BYU.
Wyoming could possibly have two more signees to go along with Henry by this time next week.
